Keeping the lamp lit

The Friends of the Frome Valentine Gas Lamp look after the Valentine Lamp and organise the annual ceremony. Frome Town Council pays for the gas. Rangers keep the square tidy. Everything depends on gifts of time and money.

All money donated goes towards the upkeep of the lamp and organising future ceremonies. The lamp needs a professional repaint, an annual service, and new mantles.

Who we are

A small volunteer group around the lamp and Catherine Street. Reg Ling is lifetime President. Beverly Shackleton-Jones is the main organiser and Eddie Young is the lamplighter. The Friends helping with recent ceremonies include Andrew Shackleton, Jo Hyde, Rachel Griffin, Nykki Mehta and Andrew Sloan.

The book

When the book is available (Winter 2026), buying a copy at £14.99 will also support the Valentine Lamp. All proceeds from sales will help fund the ongoing maintenance and the continuation of the lamplighting ceremonies. Read about the book.
